Meter
Auto-Rickshaws : the taxis of the masses. The meter is usually manipulated to show a higher fare, but Mumbai is still better off than places like Bangalore where the autos are out to suck you dry.

delhi autos are horrible...worse are the chennai ones...they dont even wrk
A slight clarification - autos in Madras are not meant to use the meter. You have to negotiate with the guy and fix the price before the trip. If you try Hyderabadi stunts like insisting on using the meter, you will get screwed over because it will run faster than any taxi meter in Bombay. There's something to be said for the Madras auto driver, who, knowing he can make more money by using the meter, will still stick to his principles by instead sucking the life force out of his passengers by haggling.
